As an act of genealogical kindness I am trying to track down any information of a Harry Bertie born around 1842 in Devon. He may have ended up in Americal and it has been the life long search for a kind gentleman, aged 85. Any information of him or potentially his family would be greatfully accepted.

He is on the 1871 census, in the R.N. on list as at sea ad ports abroad. Aged 29, born Torrington.

Royal Navy vessel "Columbine" has;
Harry Bertie age 29 Born Torrington, Devon.
He is a Private in the Royal Marines.

Also a transcript on Find My Past has;
November 1869 Harry Bertie age 26 at Boston USA.
"Source dataset United States Naval Enlistment Rendezvous 1855-1891".

That is as far as I can get but it may be possible his father was called Isaac (big pinch of salt on that). Thank you for the reply and you are on the right track. Thinking outside the box he may have jumped ship and refused to speak of anything of his life in England. Mmmmm Again many thanks.

There are quite a few Harry Berties. There is one on 1911 Canadian census, Ontario. Born 1839 England with wife Bessie born 1846.
A Harry Bertie posthumously awarded Victory and British War Medals 1914-5. Able Seaman, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, no. Tyneside/Z6048.
A Harry Bertie awarded Victoria Medal 1879, born 1847.
The Harry Bertie mentioned by Jeff enlisting at Boston, was 5`6" tall, Ruddy Complexion, Brown Hair, Grey Eyes. He was 24 years old so born 1845.Berkhampstead, England. I can't find this birth registration.

A Henry Bertie born 19.04.1843. baptised 14.05.1843. Shoreditch, London, son of James and Elizabeth.

Suggest you look for James and Elizabeth on census and marriage records, to see if there was any link to Devon.
