Hartley Lloyd

Hartley Lloyd published Solitary Hours (1834), printed by Banfield, Ilfracombe. Various attempts we're made to identify him in the Nineteenth Century but they all failed. He is not on the standard genealogical websites or British Newspaper Archive.

There was a Devon & Cornwall Notes & Queries note on him (vol. 14) 1927, p. 374 but I can't access it in Switzerland and it may not have identified him.

Could this be a nom de plume?

The son of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, named (David) Hartley Coleridge was also a poet. He was active around this time and had Devon connections.
Furthermore his book "Poems Volume 1" was published in 1833 by the same publishers as "Solitary Hours", viz. Baldwin and Cradock, London.

Hartley's fellow (school) students included the sons of their father's friend, the poet Charles Lloyd.

Peter, Thank you. Possibly a wild goose chase but a) stranger things have happened b) the same publisher is interesting.

A very good catch if it stacks up.

I have passed it on to Heather Jackson one of the editors of the Bollingen Coleridge.

There'll be a digital copy of Hartley Coleridge and I think he was reprinted in the Woodstock Revolution & Romanticism series.

I can't remember if there is a digital copy of Hartley Lloyd. I'll call up the hard copy in the British Library and get back to you.

You might have already managed to get the following information but in case you didn't, the title page of this book reads, "Local History, Biography and Antiquities of Devon and Cornwall".
Page 374 mentions Hartley Lloyd, and the snippett says "....... of his property and that of his lieutenant and for proceedings to be taken against the property of the joint owners of Piers's ship. The Lords of the Council promised to give the matter every attention." Might be nothing to do with your Hartley Lloyd, but I did find a marriage in 1797 for a Joseph Hartley (a Mariner) and a Frances Lloyd, in Plymouth, Charles the Martyr. They were both able to sign their names. However, could not find any baptisms for any children that might have taken their name as Hartley Lloyd. Sally
