William Shepherd of Sherford and Charleton, Devon

In 1791 in Devon Banns register lists; William Shepherd of the parish of Sherford and Mary Camp of the parish of Charleton, to be married 20 July 1791. In Sherford I find a baptism 5 May 1766 of William Shephard. Can this be the correct William? Any information about the Shepherds or Shephards of Sherford and in East and West Charleton would be very helpful in my search of my ancestors from Devon. Williams’ daughter Maria Shepherd, bapt. 5 February 1792 in Charleton married a Norwegian Simon Andrews in 1813 in Charleton. They also lived in Plymouth for some years before moving to Norway approx. 1821, with their 3 children.

In Charleton I am also interested in Mary Camps family, Philip Camp and Hannah Distin as well as John Shepard and Ann Ellis in Sherford. Any information from the villages in this period is also of great interest.

Found death of William, died 1845 aged 72 buried Sherford Living with Mary Kingsbridge regn area, death reg Kingsbridge regn area. 1841 ages rounded down. There are a lot of William Shepherds, so double check that any you find have not died young, and been replaced with another a bit later.

Not sure that the one I found above is right. There is a site if you google Seherford devon, came up with census for 1841 sherford, which has a William 65 a thatcher, widower I think, no Mary plus various others which could be sons, George 34 William 40, and grandchildren.
The one I found on my first posting is in a different village with a Mary, but Mary is not on the Sherford census with the William there.
We need to find the 1851 census for Sherford to see if William there in 1841 is still there.
also find the burial of Mary, should be in Kingsbridge reg area, if she died between 1837 1841.

Could be that Mary Shepherd buried Charleton @76,1854, of Kingsbridge, which ties up with the first census I found. Its a bit odd not being with William
If you go on Genuki and put in the parish, comes up with links to transcripts for you to have a good browse with.

William Shepherd the thatcher has a wife Elizabeth on census, so not him.
Suggest you order the death cert to get more information, census 1841 has him "Ind" (independent means).
Familysearch.org site useful too.

I checked the nationalarchives.gov.uk site, William Shepherd of Sherford died 1845, left a will, copy of which is at Devon heritage centre, reference no is 1078/IRW/S/561
You could always get a copy, might give you a bit more info.

Those IRE Wills are available for free on familysearch. Put Devon Wills Familysearch into the search engine. However all you get are images so a bit of searching through.

found the will. NOT sure if it is for your William Shepherd.

Will of William Shepherd of Sherford Yeoman, died 4.3.1845, proved 2.5.1845 gives Thomas Kevill of Sherford as executor. William signed with a mark.
Wife mentioned but not named, gets the house they were living in plus income from 3 properties plus land and yards, for life, then the same goes to the two daughters, Elizabeth Edwards and Susan Elliott.If either of them dies then their share goes to their children.

This is what makes me question whether this is the right William Shepherd. There is no mention of Maria. Is she dead by 1845? No mention of her children

This will ties up with the William Shepherd who had independent means on the census.

It was a struggle to find the entry, but I did!!
page 293, in the alphabetical section of Devon probate records. Fairly straightforward to read, once you get your eye in!!!

Hope this helps, perhaps more research re Maria needed to tie it all together.

Found William shepherd buried Charleton born 1771 died 1837, so looks as if he and Mary both buried there.
Also there are Philip Camp and his wife, buried in churchyard Philip buried 9.3.1800, Hannad born 1761 died 14.12.1820
also a Mary anna Maria camp died 1781, could be the mother of Philip?
There is a Mary Ann Mariah Camp Shepherd daughter of John and Hannah Shepherd baptised 1.6.1794
so did another Shepherd marry a Camp?
Found a baptism for Maria Camp, baptised 6.2.1791
but parents listed as John and Mary, so did the vicar get the names muddled?
