1939 Register

Given a recent enquiry by Judith about the 1939 Register, I am prompted to wonder how it was prepared. Did enumerators go round as happened with the Census preparations, or was it done by postal enquiries. Also given enquiries likely to be being made about the time of the annual (autumn) updating of Electoral Registers, were enquiries of property occupiers shared between these two needs, or did property occupiers have to respond to 2 sets of similar enquiries
