HODDER, John - parents and siblings

I'm looking for the names of the parents and siblings of John Hodder who married Ann Widdecombe in Ugborough 15 May 1818,
John Hodder is listed as "Yeoman" on the marriage entry.
There are 4 witnesses to the wedding, Eliza Hodder; Jenny or Peggy Widdecombe (hard to decipher); John Widdecombe and Servington Hodder.
On the 1841 census he is living in Buckland Monachorum parish. Both he and his wife's ages are given as "45".
It would appear that he died in 1844, death registered in Kingsbridge.
I'm hoping to trace John's lineage if possible. John Hodder is my 3xgreat grandfather

The 1851 census has no listing for John, and his wife Ann living at Edmeston House near Modbury, age "59" place of birth Ugborough. Ann passed away in 1861, after the 1861 census was taken (Modbury once more), where she gives her age as "70".

The John Hodder who died in 1844 was only 11, so not your John.
There is a John Hudder (Sic) bapt. Ugborough 11.03.1792 son of Servington (what a lovely name!) and Elizabeth.

Have just found a death of a John Hodder in Kingsbridge Sept Q 1850. aged 58. This would tie up with birth in 1792.

I think I have pieced them altogether now with the help of ancestry & FMP & familysearch. It's good that Devon is fairly well documented. I'm in Australia and my great-great grandmother, Catherine Hodder was John Hodder's daughter and emigrated about 1863 after she married William Henry Ford (yet to find out about him).

It appears that Servington Hodder Snr was quite a wealthy man as he left £400 to each of children in his will, which also mentions property that he owned in Ugborough.

Looking on national archives site, there is a will for Elizabeth Hodder, mother of John, who died in 1846 aged 77. She names her son John as the eldest, plus another 2 sons Servington and William, daughters Eliza married to a Widdicombe, Mary married to a Wroth, and daughter Jane single. Also mentioned are the granchildren, children of John, Named as Ann, Jane Eliza, John and Catherine.
She is buried at Ugborough with a Servington (no date of burial recorded for them, but daughter Catherine who died 1842 is recorded.

According to the Ugborough burial ground site there is another Servington born 1763 died 1835 in another grave with a Jane born 1806 died 1887, so could be the son Servington buried with his mother and sister, and father Servington buried with his daughter.
This was quite a well to do family looking at the with investments, and cash quoted, very difficult to read. Will available on National archives site if you register, and go through the process of purchasing, for free, then you can download.
I had thought that the name Maddox would have flung up more information but have not come across it....yet!

John's daughter Catherine (b 1834 Buckland Monachorum) married William Henry Ford in 1863 (Plymouth) and died in Sydney Australia in 1897. According to her grave she took the middle name Maddox. Why she did, I do not know.

I had expected it to be a surname of a grandparent, but you may need to go back another generation. My mother in law had the full name of her great grandmother as part of her christian name, she hated it! but it was a great help in family history research when there were two people with same christian name who could have been her great grandmother!! we were able to pick the one with the surname too. Keep going!! good luck

p.s. there is another Severington Hodder, son of Samuel and Sarah, on census in 1841, and a Severington Hodder born 1761 son of John and Sarah (nee Crocker) could this be husband of Elizabeth, and father of John? The baptism a bit out re death age, but not uncommon.
