A John LEY married Susannah CHAUNTER, at Exeter, 22 October 1821. A son, Benjamin William Chaunton LEY bap. 23 Feb 1823; buried 1825. Exeter.

In the 1851 census Susannah was born Kingsteighton. Can anyone help with a baptism for her? The name CHAUNTER / CHAUNTON is difficult. Many thanks,

The 1851 census indicates that she was born ca 1783, making her 38 at marriage, so she may have been a widow at marriage. (Although register makes no reference)

Might be worth checking baptisms for a Susanna in Kingsteignton, which is where she says she was born on 1851 census. I found sUsanna with surnames Cornelius, Gillard, Kemp and Pearce all baptised about the right time, in Kingsteignton. from there it would be possible to search for a Susanna Cornelius marriage, and so on.
John Ley could be John Reed Ley son of Nicholas and Jane baptised 20.4.1787 Exeter

Yes I thought she was somewhat older than usual when she married. So perhaps I should search for ? who married a Chaunton/Chaunter first... I need even more luck to find that

Thanks for trying to help me, Judith. I am trying to discover where the Ley came from in this line. It has carried down to numerous descendants and must have some significance. Yes the 1851 census shows Susanna with two of the children belonging to Richard Norsworthy and Jane OSMOND / OSMAND. I did think that the name CHAUNTER sounded like possibly being CAUNTER, but when it was repeated in the son's name, Benjamin William Chaunton LEY, I sort of abandoned it. I'll keep working at it. Looking at 1851 census she is a widow, with a niece and nephew living with her. Niece is Mary Jane aged 15, and nephew is John Ley Nosworthy aged 7, looking on GRO site for births, it gives his mothers maiden name as Osman. So PERHAPS Susanna was an Osman? and young John has been named after his Godfather/uncle.(could be great nephew and niece but worth investigating further).
He was born Exeter, sister born Highweek, where there is another connection, a Charlotte Caunter daughter of George Caunter married 2.7.1831 a John Ley, his father named John. Another line worth investigating. It sometimes pays to go sideways and establish links that way.
