Hi, I've been researching a John Scott of Devon, apparently born in 1827 or 1829, and likely in Dulverton. He was a clerk who enlisted with the 9th lancers and went to India. He stayed there, married and lived his life. It looks like his father might have been a yeoman as there's a John Scott in school in the 1841 census whose father is a yeoman. His father was also a John Scott. The only John Scott I've found was born to John and Harriet in Morepath. I've no way of confirming this is him. I'll join the Devon FHS and do some more research. Meanwhile has anyone already looked for a John Scott of Dulverton who matches this man? I can share his India story. It's the Devon years that are the mystery. He did post mentions of important family occasions in the Exeter papers years later, so he must have thought there would be people in Devon who would still know him.
