Abel Worth

Looking for information on Abel Worth who died in Kenton in 1821. There's a memorial tablet to him inside All Saints' Church but there doesn't seem to be a corresponding entry in the burial register. There's a picture of the memorial tablet, which has information about his bequests to various charities in Exeter, on the Find A Grave website https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/194392962/abel-worth
Does anyone have any information about him please?

Was he buried in Kenton though? There is a will proved in 1822 for an Abel WORTH of The Strand, London. This tallies with the newspaper reports at the time that describe bequests in both Devon & London.

Thanks Deborah. Yes the memorial records 'Near this tablet are deposited the remains of Abel Worth Esq.'
and 'He died in this parish'

If available, it might be worth looking at the Bishop's Transcripts. I have seen in the past that they can be better than the actual Registers. Sometimes think that it might be a case that a Vicar trys to be more careful with what he is telling his Bishop !!!!!

Hmm, I wonder if his burial wasn't recorded as it was within the Church and not the grounds? Seems strange. The newspapers all confirm that he died at his home in the parish.

Yes, I feel it’s rather strange. I wasn’t aware that there may have been any differences in the formalities between burial in the church and burial in the churchyard.

The Exeter Flying Post of 14 June 1821 has a notice of Abel's death:

On the 4th instant, at Starcross, Abel Worth, Esq. aged about 88 years: formerly a resident at Lisbon.

Other newspaper reports (about the bequests) refer to him dying 'at his seat in Devonshire'.

Perhaps the vicar forgot to put it in the register, could have had details on a piece of paper/ dropped it /.
