Another one from 1891 which I cannot find.

This time it is Frederick Murrian, born to parents Richard and Mary Gloyn in March quarter 1875, as Murring. He is with parents in 1881 (as Murran)at Metherall, Milton Abbott, aged 6, born Milton Abbott,and in 1901, also living with parents at Metherall (as Murrian), aged 22, a general farm labourer. In 1911 he is living at 4 (Trelawny House)Cendle Terrace, Cwm, Monmouthshire as an Uncle of the Head - Sidney James Murrian, with Sidney's wife and son. Also there is James Murrian (father of Sidney, so brother to James).said to be born Lifton, Devon. Anyone have any inspired ideas for where he was in 1891??

Have you found Bessie in 1891? did her mother remarry? The first child born Devonport, so was he working there? or could have been elsewhere given he seemed to be digging tunnels etc. Have you looked in Wales?

Frederick G Murrison listed on 1891 at week farm, as ag lab.which is near the place he was living in 1881 with his parents. Looking at page on census enumerator blocked out end of name, should be murrin, I think this is him.

Thanks for your help Judith.
I have previously found on the GRO index, registration of a birth of Frederick George Murrin, in June quarter 1875, Okehampton Reg. District and have found him variously on other Census returns. The maiden name of the GRO index is Vallance, so cannot be the one I want whose mother was Mary nee Gloyn, so I had discounted that one.
Your interest was nonetheless much appreciated.

As to my other query, thanks for the tip, I'll check the Wales angle.

Found another one, living with his uncle John Murrin, a farmer at Giffords Hele, Meeth, Okehampton.
If Richard had a brother John then it could be him.

1841 has Richard and older brother John living Stowford with parents William and Ann.

Thanks for your continued suggestions. There was certainly an older brother of Richjard, called John so the suggestion about Frederick being with him in 1891 needs looking at further. Hoiwever, there are an awful lot of Johns in the family, especially around this time frame and they need a lot of unpicking which I am coincidentally only just starting on.

After the one in 1841, the water gets muddied because of all the Johns in the family, immediately confused by 2 deaths registered in Okehampton R.D. One in 1925 was for one who was 69 when he died, so born abt. 1856 so wouldn't seem to fit either of the Johns in 1841(there were 2 in that same family). There is no death indication of the age for the other, though it was registered in 1856 so might have some relevance to one of those Johns. I'll have to get the Death Certificates to see if they help as I feel I need to sort out who they were to understand if either was the John in 1841. There are others in later Census years and I have details for them - John, John E. John Emmanuel and Emmanuel who might be all the same one - or not. The bames of John E. and John Emmanuel feature variously in those living in Meeth in 1891, 1901 and 1911 and if the one you found at Giffords Hele, Meeth is one of these, I can say from what I already know that it might be that they had no close relationship to Richard.

A lot more research is needed so continue to keep your eyes on the Message Board, as if anything comes up, I'll let you know.

Frederick Murr**n b 1875

My investigations show in 1891 Frederick Murr** is in Week Cottages no more than 1/2 mile from Metherell. In 1901 he is back with parents in Metherell. James Murrian (age 35) with wife Jane and son Sydney (15) are now in Week Cottages. In 1911 Sydney Murrian, a railway signalaman (now 25) has married Florence (from brentor) and is living in Ebbw Vale with his father James (age 46) and Uncle Frederick (age 35). Both from Lifton. Hope this helps.

Thank you for interest, Francis. I'm with you all the way with 1901 and 1911, but you don't seem to have got 1891 right saying that he was living with his parents, Richard and Mary at Metherall Cottage(s).
I now think, on balance, Judith was right in suggesting "Frederick G", 2/3 doors away from Metherall Cottage living with William Dawes etc. at Week Barton.
Notwithstanding the "G", for the reasons I explained to her in my response to her suggestion, it couldn't be Frederick G., who I think was elsewhere anyway. He did have a second christian name - of John - so "G" would be wrong, and the age (of 14 rather than 16) is close enough for me not to be a serious issue. Milton Abbott, as a birth place, is also not a problem and is certainly much more acceptable than Okehampton where Frederick G. was born.
So I'm happy to go with the Frederick at Week Barton and apologise to Judith for not thinking more about her suggestion

frederick J could have been mistranscribed as Frederick G, given a strong accent! Logical that the children were finding work locally at that age, before moving on. Pleased to have helped a bit!
