Have established that the Superintendent Registrar for Births etc at the time was James Terrell (via the London Gazette, newly on FindMyPast), a solicitor. Directories on Ancestry give him an office in Bartholomew St in the 1850s, and one called Robson's Directory describes him in 1839 as the Superintendent Registrar for Births etc at that office. (Having made an error, I couldn't leave it alone). If you have a certificate for the marriage, there may be mileage in looking for the person who acted as Registrar. I take it you have looked at old maps e.g. on National Library of Scotland (link from Devon FHS website)|
