I've been searching for years for a baptism record for Mary Glover. She married John Gay in Upton Pyne in 1783. They had four children: John, Martha, Robert and Mary. Their banns state they are both of the parish of Upton Pyne, but I have never been able to find a baptism for her (or indeed any Glovers in this area). If anyone has any information or ideas where to look it would be greatly appreciated.
Best wishes Samuel Fawcett
Re: Help with Mary Glover of Upton Pyne (approx 1760)
There is an entry on National archives site relating to a lease of a property at Lapford, for a Mary Glover, a widow, and her daughter Mary, the family may have come from outside the area. Or the Vicar got the name wrong, Have you checked out the Mary's baptised at Upton Pyne? to see if someone was baptised there, and father died and mother remarried? and then she could have been known by her stepfathers name? Or the mother was single when Mary was born, and then married the father afterwards, so you would need to look for a Glover marriage around that date, and then look for the baptism with the mothers surname. Hope this makes sense. I have someone on my tree baptised with one name, and married with another, only finding the birth of the youngest child who was registered gave us the mothers maiden name and we found the marriage, subsequently more documentation confirmed that he was illigit, but baptised with the fathers surname.
