I am looking for a date of a burial at St.John the Baptist, Membury. The person is James Hines and he died on September 23rd 1877. If anyone has access to the register or can inform me where the burial register is archived I would be much obliged. I am based in the West Midlands so any help will be appreciated Regards Terry Evans
I suspect that the post 1863 burial register for Membury, if it has survived, is still with the incumbant. The Devon Heritage Centre catalogue holdings for Membury burials stops at 1868. Familysearch has Bishop's transcripts online, but these end at 1863; these were filmed from the holdings at the Devon Heritage Centre so I doubt that they will have anything later.
His death was registered as James HINE, and he is that on the family search site, he was 65 when he died, registered as Hine, according to the gro regn but on the census he is giving his age as 2 years younger.
He was baptised on November 28th 1813 at St. John's Membury. His dates of birth from the census returns are 1841 - 1816, 1851 - 1813, 1861 - 1813 and 1871 - 1813. His surname is Hine on his death certificate but this varied between Hines/Haynes/Haines in various other documents.
Hi Judith Many thanks for the reply. I have his death certificate and he was born, lived and died in Membury. I have assumed that he would have been buried at St. John's as his wife had been buried there in 1863 Regards Terry
Devon Heritage centre should have the register, or if not then there will be copies of the bishops transcripts on film there. If you have the date of death that should suffice for research purposes, unless you think he was buried elsewhere.
