I wonder if anyone has any experience of finding a death certificate for a person lost at sea. I have discovered that my Gt Gt Grandfather Thomas Cross was lost overboard in a snow storm off Plymouth on 12th March 1858. He was aged 34yrs serving in the Merchant service on the Elizabeth Mary Ann bound for Pentewan. There is a Thomas Cross dying Stoke Damerel 2nd Quarter 1858, not him. Ideas please

Hi Robert, You need to make an application to GRO. Thomas' death should be recorded in the "Marine Register of Deaths". As you have the name of the vessel & the date of death & age, this should be reasonably easy for them to identify the correct entry.
