In a previous post, you mentioned that you had the 1954 marriage certificate.
What is Robert's occupation? And is his full address given? Is he a bachelor?
In 1939, there is a Robert J Lethbridge (DOB 4 Aug 1909) in Ottery St Mary UD. Occupation market gardener. Partial address: 5 St Saviours. Marital status: single.
He is with Arthur W and Elizabeth A Carter.
Ottery St Mary is within Honiton reg dist (the district where the marriage was registered).

Hi Karen, I'm so sorry I've just discovered your post on 2 April re Lethbridge. I don't know why it wasn't with the main thread. In answer to your questions: Occupation: Foreman, Devon Mushrooms Ltd. Address: St. Saviours Terrace, Ottery St. Mary. Bachelor. I have his birth certificate. I imagine he was boarding with the Carters.

The info on the marriage cert and 1939 Register seem to tie in.
I am no expert on WWII but I wonder if his occupation meant he was not required to sign up for war service.
FindMyPast has a record for an R Lethbridge wounded in 1944. Dorsetshire Regiment, but not much more info than that.

Thanks Karen, My Robert James Lethbridge was in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia in the RAAF in 1943 and remained in Aus until at least 1951 so the Dorsetshire man is not connected to our family.
