I believe that I have found a marriage for my John Bennett to Elizabeth Sangar/Sanger in Chulmleigh in June 1834. Chawleigh, where his father was a Miller, is in the same district. |
I have found that John & Elizabeth had 2 sons, James and Thomas. James(same name as John's Dad), was christened in Chawleigh and Thomas in St Sidwells, Exeter in 1838. I also found John & Elizabeth with James in St Sidwells in the 1841 census.Sadly Thomas had died aged 6 months.
John is shown as a 'barely deciperable' shoemaker.
James appears in the 1851 census in St Sidwells as an apprentice bootmaker, but no sign of John & Elizabeth.
I think John & Elizb. moved to Stoke Damerel and that John & Elizabeth perished in the 1849 Cholera epidemic. Their deaths are recorded within 3 days of each other in Sept. 1849, although strangely the addresses in Stoke Damerel are different. Perhaps one of them was being nursed away from home.
The son James had a career change and became a prison officer, initially at Dartmoor and later at Portland. Significantly, his declaration to the Civil Service in 1869 stated that both of his parents were dead.
I am fairly confident that I have got these details correct, but would welcome comments on the subject.
