missing marriage

Any clues please for marriage of John Powel to a Joan, circa 1720's. son Edmund born 1725, baptised Edmund Powell Powel at Lydford. have looked on find my past devon marriage, no luck, also lydford, the same. Other children born not given the extra middle name, so am wondering if it was a clerical error.

Hi Judith,
I have looked at original baptism entry for Lydford and it states Edmund Powell son of John Powel (sic)
and Joan on 03.11.1728. Perhaps they have put Edmund Powell Powel because of the two different spellings of Powel(l). I could not find a marriage for John and Joan.

Thanks sally, that's what I found/did not find!
Am trying to see if John is brother of Mary Powel who married Valentine Phillips in 1721 Lydford. If so then it is a case of first cousins marrying, Edmund Powell son of John married Margaret Phillips d of Valentine and Mary (nee Powell)

I have looked through the baptisms for Lydford and there isn't a Margaret Phillips baptised in the time scale you are looking for. There a few outside the area but it would be diffult to prove this is the right Margaret. As Tim has said it would be difficult to go back further than the 1721 marriage for Valentine Phillips and Mary Powel.

Problem is that I don't think the registers actually exist, for the time frame you are looking for.

According to the Devon Parish Register List on the South West Heritage Trust site, the Baptism Register for Lydford starts in 1716 and the marriage Register starts in 1719. So unless any BT's exist for Lydford for before 1720, then you may not be able to go any further back.

There are Bishops transcripts pre 1700, but given that Edmund son of John and Joan Baptised 1725, would assume that marriage is between 1700 & 1725, have looked at the transcripts,pre 1700 very difficult to read, but managed to find the birth of Valentine Phillips, 1688, son of Henry and Margaret. (another couple to trace!!!)
