I am trying to find the birth of Gilbert Wilson in 1863 in Torquay. His parents were John and Jane Wilson.

If you go on National archives site, put n Gilbert Wilson, Torquay, it comes up with date of birth 4th June 1862, and he is a merchant seaman, similarly, gilbert Wilson Brixham comes up with what looks like his son, Gilbert John Wilson born 1892. worth looking at.Not sure if a download copy is available you would need to explore site further.

1891 census he says he is 28, which means he is in his 29th year, so you need to take 29 from 91 which gives you 1862 as year of birth. I think it is the one registered in June 1862 in Newton Abbot

There's this one:

WOLSON, GILBERT

GRO Reference: 1862 J Quarter in NEWTON ABBOT Volume 05B Page 152

Ties in with the birth date of 4th June 1862 on his Naval Reserve record.

However, there's no mother's maiden name shown, which implies he was illegitimate.

There is a baptism for a Gilbert Wilson on 17th August 1862 in Torquay (viewable on FMP) which gives the parents as John and Harriet.

Have found the marriage for John and Jane.
John Cole WOOLSON marries Jane WEATHERLAKE in 1848 in Berry Pomeroy.

The Mothers surname matches what is given for the MMN of Gilbert's elder siblings according to the GRO.

And his brother Frederick was actually registered as Frederick John Cole WILSON.

It may be because the baptism in St Marychurch, (not strictly Torquay at that time) gives the address as Exeter. Fathers occupation is carpenter.

John Wilson was a cab driver in Torquay. He had a sister Harriet so maybe Gilbert was her child and gave him to John and Jane to bring up .Gilbert is
living with the Wilson's in 1871 on Abbey Road, Torquay.
