My wife is a Godfrey, her great grandfather was John Stone b 16 Jun 1842, Silverton, the illegitimate son of William Stone b 1796 and Sarah Godfrey b 1813. John Stone changes his name during life ( John Godfrey Stone, John Stone Godfrey and finally John Godfrey). John Stone married Jane Prowse (born Jane Vanstone Soper 1846 - another change of name) 18 Jan 1871, Stoke Damerel. |
1871, John & Jane Stone are living with John’s uncle, John Godfrey b 1816, farmer 37 acres Middle Combe, Tamerton Foliott.
1881, John S Godfrey (Head), Farmer 63 acres, Jane Godfrey & 7 children are living at West Combe, Tamerton Foliott.
I cannot John Stone/Godfrey thereafter.
1891 Jane Godfrey (Head) and Married, Wife of Navy Pensioner? (difficult to read) and two of her children are living 66, Highstreet, East Stonehouse, with other families.
1901 cannot find John or Jane Godfrey.
1911 Jane Godfrey, Widow, living with her son at 11, Laira Street, Plymouth.
A John Godfrey died Q4 1903 Plymouth, Volume 5b. Page 154. I was hoping that the person registering the death would be his wife, Jane, but it is a Coroner’s certificate. John Godfrey’s address is given as 2 Carter Terrace.
Any suggestions to where I should look for the later life of John Stone (Godfrey) would be gratefully received.
