I have many newspaper reports of George Odger's death (and life) and most of them will say he was born in Roborough, Devon.
The "local" newspaper to which I referred was the Plymouth & Exeter Gazette, who published many articles about George Odger, obviously very proud that he was from the county.
The baptism you mention could well be the one I'm looking for. Where can I see the record for this? Although in most of the obituaries George Odger's age is recorded as 62 or 63 which would make him born in 1814/1815. In all the articles I've read, I've never found any information on his family. Recently somebody contacted me as they were writing a dissertation about George Odger. They told me that had found information that his father was called John and was also a shoemaker. Unfortunately, they weren't able to share the source for this.
You mentioned census records. In 1851 the birthplace is Devonshire. In 1861 it's Eggbuckland, Devon. In 1871 birthplace is recorded as Roborough, Somerset.
It seems this website doesn't have the records for Roborough nr Plymouth? The search for Roborough just brings up the publications I've already purchase, which as I know now are not the ones I'm looking for.
Thanks again for the information, very much appreciated.
