My mother was a Gillard by marriage to James Arnold Gillard 1888-1988 (JAG); Searches show that there was another James Gillard awarded medal(s) in WW1. However JAG was a serial bigamist and started life as Alfred Arnold Gregory from Essex; Whilst he served in WW1 it was under his birth name; quite why he chose his (known) bigamous marriages names is a mystery but he retained his name as JAG till his death. Remarkably there is a plaque in his honour at St Cross Hospice ,Winchester, so - beware of imposters when searching Gillard. I was born in Exeter (1943) and researching my family and step-mother Hilda Winifred Griffiths (D 1974) if anyone is interested in helping me. All the usual channels have been explored => brickwalls.
