Thank-you for your response.
All of my ancestors and several related families of Wedlake lived in the parish of Roche, Cornwall, in the 1800s before coming to New Zealand.
In the 1851 census the head of the families, William Wedlake, shows in Bilberry (near Roche, Cornwall) as widowed, aged 80 years, Tin Streamer (formally), Whitechurch Devon.
That is the link to Devon and I can not find his birth in Cornwall.
Google Maps does find a Whitechurch in Devon, so I assume this meant Whitchurch, near Tavistock. Hence the query regarding the mother Eliza in 1767.
It is quite possible that Elizabeth came from Cornwall to have the baby and then returned, or she could have come from anywhere in Devon to stay with relatives, friends or at a safe house although I think anywhere more than say 100 miles is unlikely.
The William & Grace Widlake baptism is in North Molton. That is some distance from Tavistock. Is there a Whitechurch there perhaps?
