Thanks Deborah. I used to use Free BMD a lot but when GRO extended the practice of giving the mothers maiden name in the index, all the way back to 1837, I started to use GRO as a first "shot". Free BMD only used to give the mothers maiden name for birth registered after 1912 and I think this is still their practice, which of course does help with the case I had looking between 1919 and 1939. I was really interested in what the GRO web site says where it requires the year as part of its standard search. The result I found of not having years on the drop down 1919 and 1984 would suggest the index cannot be searched for births between those years and my message was checking whether this was accurate.
