Torquay was well known as a place to come for Comsumption/TB, many hospitals and convalescent homes were established but 1832 is rather early and I don't know of any such place around at that time. It was thought that the clean air and the clean sea was an aid to a cure- this was not the case but life may have improved away from the pollution elsewhere. Most of the hospitals/convalescent homes were established in the large villas and in one case an end terraced house. The burial register is no help- MAY Richard was buried:- 31 March 1832 age:- 34 notes/address:- of Lambeth, Surrey where:- Tormoham Later on the name of the establishment tends to be used. As far as I can see there is no gravestone for him. |
