I would greatly appreciate a 'look up' if possible of my ancestors PHOEBE WOODHOUSEb. 1897 imprisoned
1914-1916. It is possible a photo of prisoner is included in report.
Thank you for any help. Sylvia White Canada
From 1879 these Devon County Prison receiving books were replaced by 'nominal registers' which were similar sorts of admission registers. These are in 5853H/A/5 and cover years up to 1964. There are 42 volumes in this series. There are some more indexes to prisoners in series 5853H/A/8.
5853H/A/9 which is another series in this collection, consists of photograph albums.
5853H/A/9/1 is an album of Devon and Exeter female prisoners, with index. This album contains photographs of first-time offenders, with the folio number of the page in the receiving book on which they appear. The first few pages of the index covering surnames beginning with A to I is missing [and these missing index pages may actually be the separately catalogued item 5853H/A/4/28 which is an index covering the letters A to I ]. This volume has been indexed by the Devon Family History Society, and we have a copy of the booklet containing this index. The society can also let you know from their computer database if a particular woman’s photograph is indexed in that booklet.
