1789 John Pine was apprenticed to Thomas Lyde for Mr Austing's (Ref 1855A/PO 20/151) - Sidmouth Overseer of the Poor documents.
1804 - Aged 21yrs - John Pine joined R.N. (He was not pressed.)
Please can someone help to identify who was Thomas Lyde - landowner, farmer or someone with a trade? What does it mean 'for Mr Austing's'. Is it possible to locate where in the parish John Pine would have lived? I am in Leicestershire but would this reference be to documents held at Exeter Record Office. What additional information might they hold? I guess John's apprenciship ran through till he was 21yrs. Then it appears John chose a life at sea.
