My ancestor and namesake, John Bennett, one of many JBs in my family tree, was born and christened in Roborough in Dec. 1809.
His parents were James Bennett(1783- 1847) and Mary Squance (1791 - 1862). John's father was a miller in Beaford and later in Chawleigh. The 1851 census records James' widow Mary as a Miller and the son James continued the line later in Chawleigh.
I have searched the census documents extensively for John Bennett, but have not found one with the correct age and birthplace.
I have also checked out an extensive list of John Bennett marriages in Devon, and then searched the census records for the John Bennett/wife combination. No likely candidate has been found.
Another possibility is that John died at a relatively young age. One possible record I have found relates to a John Bennett who was buried in Lamerton in Oct. 1837, aged 27. This would be exactly the correct age for my John Bennett. Lamerton is some 30 miles from his parents home but one is aware that AgLabs frequently traveled such distances to find work.
I would be grateful for any suggestions as to how one might confirm the burial record or alternatively to find records of a marriage or a census.
