Only clue is Northam, given as place name next to Richard's name. Could not find a Marriage, of Pain/e with that name combination. Did find a birth of Hannah daughter of same couple, in 1701 at Drewsteignton, fathers name given as Pain or Davies of Biddeford. Using that and variable spelling found a marriage 2.10.1685 at Crediton of Richard Davy and Hannah Pearce. All in same sort of area. Also found Mildred daughter of Richard Davy Crediton 21.8.1688
Interesting note in the transcriptions book that a Thomas Paine is a churchwarden there in 1691.
In the past I have had an instance where a couple were married under one name, and when they went back for the christening of first child were using another name, and further research determined that the parents of the father were not married, someone must have said something, and he used his mothers surname from then on.
so am I looking at that situation again? Starts off as Davy/Davie/ and by 1702 is using the Pain name, which goes on to be the family name on my tree up to the 1850's when a daughter marries and a new name comes in to play.
What happened to Mildred/Mildread Davy? can't find her, could she have kept the Davy name or became a Pain/e/Payne.
