The Uniform Monday Holiday Act, enacted on June 28, 1968, is an Act of Congress that permanently moved some federal holidays to a Monday - not counting New Year's Day, the Fourth of July and Christmas. This created long weekends with three days off. Veterans Day was moved from November 11 to the fourth Monday in October. This triggered an outcry from veterans groups across the country. The Armistice ending World War I was signed at 11:00 AM on Nov. 11, 1918. We must never forget the signing of the Armistice on the Eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. This was "written in stone" for us to never forget. In 1978 Veterans Day was returned to November 11.
