After sitting through close to 50 games this season as a coach and nearly 100 as a fan, I feel it necessary to do all of the fans out there in the MAIS world a favor, with some simple, general information rules about basketball that I have discovered the majority of fans don't seem to know.
1. Three second violations - for starters, you cannot get a three second violation if the ball is in the back court. three seconds is counted as 1 mississippi 2 mississippi 3 mississippi... not 1 2 3 really fast. also, the three seconds count resets every time there is a shot taken.
2. backcourt - the rule book states that both feet of the player in possession of the ball and the ball must cross half court and return to the backcourt for it to be a violation. he can put one foot across, he can put the ball across, he can put both feet, but unless all three cross the half court stripe, there is no back court violation.
lastly, you do not have to be stationary to draw a charge.
I felt it necessary to post this as it seems so many fans are not aware of the rules they are screaming about, and it's at every single school I've been to (mine included).
so please folks, yell at the refs... it helps create the game atmosphere. but please, PLEASE know the rules before you do it
