It is purely money. Not ratings or content quality. It is happening all across the industry. When you cut so much, you start getting to limited ways to cut more and you will see more and more of this.

iHeart & Cumulus are laying off ALL staff including part timers at many stations. Add on sales, receptionists and toilet cleaners. That screams the severity of the financial situation, this pales in comparison.

If they can make news, talk and sports run with no staff, they will. AI anyone? That is next.

It probably is. Then again, many sports talk radio stations also have solo hosts. I'm just trying to put 2 & 2 together.

Historically, and I think this dates back long before The SCORE started broadcasting at 104.3 FM in addition to its longtime host at 670 AM starting in February.

The SCORE has tended to hire from within over the years and not hired outside the market, and I think it dates back long before Audacy took over management of the station in 2017 when they merged with CBS Radio.

In plain English, for all I know, the replacement for Mike Mulligan in morning drive come Monday may already be on the Audacy-owned sports talk station's payroll. It might not be CHSN's Ruthie Polinsky or Clay Harbor that joins David Haugh in morning drive. I don't know who else SCORE management has in mind to fill this opening as Chicagoans start their day.

Mulligan had been with The SCORE for 23 years, which is an eternity in ANY job nowadays.

It's never fun when someone loses their job. I don't think there's a right way either.

One last thing. On The SCORE's Website, they have temporarily renamed "Mully & Haugh" as "SCORE Mornings" on its schedule for Monday. They have done the same for middays, now listed as "Rahimi & Grote" with Mark Grote & Leila Rahimi continuing to host the show as a duo rather than a trio with Marshall Harris also sent packing.
