WGTO 910 AM

Driving in northwest Indiana heard the station ID for WGTO. It was the first time I heard it referred as part of Langford Broadcasting. May have done it before, but I did not hear. The signal was iffy, as I have referred previously.

Langford, of course, is Larry Langford, the last voice heard on WIND and WMAQ. He later was the spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department. His mom, Anna, was a legendary Chicago alderman.

WGTO was issued in 1988, the last daytime only license. Just learned he also owned WDOW (1440 AM) but sold that frequency in 2010 for $80,000 and sent dark so another station would have a better signal. Cannot recall that station.

Not the whole story. AM signal is directional North West over the lake that is why it was iffy on your radio. "97.1 The Ride" is where listeners tune in.

With the "DV" in that translator callsign, it would be cool if 97.1 The Drive expanded into South Bend, but they'd have to add 910 or some HD2 channel to keep it legit.

Phil, is WWDV-HD1 still on? Last few times I wandered up North, it was analog only. Jeremy or anyone up there can verify this?

They also have 97.5 FM in Valparaiso. I think WFRN (104.7 FM), a Christian station out of Elkhart, may have at one time, also used 97.5.

detectivetom, wasn't the 97.5 frequency, a translator for WGTO-AM at one time?

Larry Langford is a good dude. Loves radio. Big proponent for AM radio and AM Stereo..... back in the day. He realizes the AM band is toast and you need presence on FM to be relevant.

Side note, I wonder what the reason was that MeTV did not renew WGTO via 97.1 makes no sense. MeTV does not have the largest or most profitable affiliate network.

I agree it does not make sense for METV music to drop WGTO. Unless they thought listeners would tune to WYCM (95.7 FM) in Lafayette, Ind. They picked up METV same time it was dropped at GTO.

METV is also on WJMK (1250AM) in Saginaw, Michigan.
