Driving today in northwest Indiana and clearly picked up WTMJ (620AM) from Milwaukee. Thought I heard a familiar voice. It was Libby Collins! I guess she does weekend mornings.
Old, old, radio followers will recall she was married to the late Warren Freiberg, conservative talk show host. They were on WLNR (106.7 FM) out of Lansing, Illinois. He was famously fired after an appearance on AM Chicago. He squired liquid soap in the face of Jerry Williams, a liberal talk show host of WRKO, Boston. WLNR had just been purchased by Johnson Publishing (WJPC). He was immediately fired. Heck, that had to be in 1985. I recall a Chicago Tribune article on the firing said he was earning $60,000 annually.
Libby and Warren then went on WCGO, the Chicago Heights one. They may also have been on WJOB in Hammond. Think they started on WLNR in Gary. After he died, she was on WAIT, Crystal Lake.
Anyways….pardon my rant. Good to hear a voice from many years ago still around. She has to be in her early to mid 70s. Good for her.
I remember the radio and TV show too. He had a set of pipes man. But, history does not remember him for that. He was a total jerk and POS. That is what he is remembered for.
I miss 1600 WCGO, with the Big Band / Adult Standards mix — even in the latter years when the music was fed by satellite. There was a time when I lived within its tiny 23-watt nighttime coverage area.
