Sign off requirements

Was listening to WNDZ (950AM) when they signed off for day at 4:30. They just gave the station ID. Are stations required to say they are ending the broadcast day?

No, to my knowledge.
A simple "WNDZ Portage" is all that's needed sign on or sign off.
Years ago, they were (simulcasting)//88.5 WSFI and would say "tune in to 88.5 WSFI for programming to continue. WNDZ will return to the air..."

Years ago, when many more stations signed on/off, it was common practice to air the national anthem, both sign on and sign off. They would also take the time to announce contact information, license information, power allowed for the station and other info.

LOL John. I doubt anyone here is younger than 40 and that is pushing it! The younger generation knows nothing about tropo, DX, AM in general, ground/sky wave etc....

See the RadioInk article below. 62% of listeners are over FIFTY FIVE. But, they still spin it that radio is on good footing. No it is not, when the advertising industry seeks those under 54! You are niche targeting 38% of your audience in a mass appeal delivery system.

1290 WZUU (AM) Milwaukee when it was a daytimer in the 1970's ran a signoff message that resembled a eulogy. Something to the effect of "We are gathered here to say goodbye to WZUU AM for the the evening. But it will rise again tomorrow when the sun comes up in the east", and went on from there. I wish someone had the entire recording.

If I could, 1170 (then) WLKE Waupun, WI would sign off with "As we leave the air, the next hours are brought to you by the ???? mattress shop on Main Street in Waupun. Have a great night's sleep. This is 1170 WLKE Waupun"

11-70 WLKE "Lucky 11-70" was a nice little Top 40 in its day!
