Notre Dame game

Was listening to the Notre Dame game in the car on WEFM (95.9FM) out of Michigan City. Discovered it was five seconds or so ahead of the flagship station WBBM (780AM). As I have previously posted, WEFM broadcast of White Sox games is a few seconds ahead of flagship WMVP (1000AM).

Was wondering how that could be. One would think it would operate the opposite way.

It used to be because of the IBOC HD signal being buffered. The HD has been off for eons, so I believe it is because Newsradio is on a purposely time delay. Or it can be because of time delay as the signal traverses the internet or the STL (signal traveling to the transmitter).

Jeremy might know best why this is!

If I could, when I dx, other CBS stations are 5 or 7 seconds ahead of WBBM. Years ago, on a message board I pointed this out. IE: "Time at the tone is..." and I was called everything in the book, for being too picky. Well, I guess I still am. (You would not set your watch to that.)

Correct time, if you want to pass the time:

How times have changed. 99% of the country has no idea what WWV is, or any of the time frequency signals on the SW bands are.

WWV has a killer TOH ID…

Once in a while you’ll hear WWVH from Hawaii booming in over WWV, with announcements in a female voice.

But, Phil, we can't forget our friends to the north, Canada. CHU on on 3330, 7850, and 14670 kHz

Even more important, CHU, WWV & WWVH can't heard in most of Alaska and wide swaths of Western Canada. Saving the day is LW station WWVB @ 60 kHz, even though there is no audio and uses time code signals. This is the station that automatically controls all the atomic clocks to set time, not using the internet or other manual actions.

:upvote: for CHU! My failover when WWV isn’t making the trip. Also get to hear the time in Français.

I have two clocks that keep time with WWVB. The only setting is for timezone. Always accurate. That signal is strong even 8 feet down in my basement. No TOH ID on 60 kHz and they don’t subscribe to ratings haha

I would bet money that Z is right — it’s most likely a synthetic delay added to compensate for the now-absent HD Radio stream (8.2 seconds for Hybrid AM HD, if I remember right?). That was so when the HD signal was lost, there was no timeshift when a receiver dropped back to analog AM. If WEFM is only 5 or so seconds ahead, they might have their own delay of a couple seconds with relayed audio from the mother ship.

Years ago, I had an HD receiver in the car. I'd have WBBM-AM on. The HD signal was going in/out/in/out so much (during daylight hours-summer 3-4PM, in Wisconsin) that the station was really unlistenable.
Glad they're rid of it. but "HD" was the "saviour" of AM radio they said for a while.
