While driving I tuned into WWCA (1270AM), an affiliate of Relevant Radio. I knew for several years it was the Spanish language version of Relevant Radio. I noticed it was about five seconds ahead of the Relevant Radio broadcast at WNDZ (950 AM) in Chicago.

I looked it up and WWCA has an interesting history. Frank Reynolds started there.

Still makes it to Southern WI during summer (lousy dx) months.

I recall that it was part of the ABC radio network for Gary, under the same call.

The ABC connection would explain perhaps, how Frank Reynolds eventually made it to network television and nightly anchorman.

Only 71 miles between Gary & Elkhart. WWCA Gary and WCMR Elkhart. Looked at signals and both seem to shoot North-South.
Years ago, then 1550 WMIR Lake Geneva WI was so close to 1550 WHIT Madison WI.
Just seems so close, but FCC and Engineering know more than me. Just seemed interesting.

And then you’ve got 50,000 watt WXYT Detroit, also with a highly directional signal, aimed away from South Bend… Nevertheless I’ve heard WXYT where I am 35 miles south of downtown Chicago overrunning WWCA Gary.

Why is WXYT even on anymore, when they have a full service FM which has a majority of the listeners?

WXYT AM is a necessity to reach all those people driving around in these fine American made machines….
