I find it interesting when I read about history of Chicago radio, particularly FM stations, they started as background music for particular stores. Know folks here are more aware of Chicago radio than I, but that background music start kind of intrigued me. Also made me think of the “beautiful music” stations of yesteryear. Doubt there are too many left in the country.
Most likely a very endangered format! I'm not sure how many are left myself. Your post got me thinking how the "Classic" FM100 format (WFMF/WLOO days, and other various Muzak varieties of it!) used to be the de facto sound in the grocery store. I'm pretty sure that either Jewel/Osco or Burgers Foods (defunct) in Munster actually played FM 100 outright. Now grocery stores sound like The Bridge (XM), a classic-ish Lite FM sound or the Blend (XM), the Drive, or a mix of all 3!
