I guess this is similar to the closing of WMAQ-AM in 2001? I don't know much about the NY market:

Audacy has announced a licensing deal with Good Karma Brands in which the company will move the programming of “ESPN New York” 98.7 WEPN-FM to 880 WCBS effective August 26.

I was reading that WCBS-AM in New York had been an all-news outlet since 1967. Unlike here in Chicago, New Yorkers have another radio station in the Audacy family that'll do the heavy lifting when it comes to news radio there.

That station in New York is 1010 AM WINS, which has been delivering news to New Yorkers for 7 decades and has been simulcasting news on 92.3 FM since 2022.

From what I read, Audacy still owns 880 AM in Gotham. WCBS' call letters will be retired & renamed legally as WHSQ-AM. I'm sure that ESPN Radio & Good Karma Brands will also rebrand the radio station when the move takes effect in 2 weeks. New York Mets' radio broadcasts will still be heard on the 880 AM frequency as well as on the Audacy app in that market.

I think the reason for the change is two fold. 1. ESPN New York's LMA with Emmis Communications is expiring at 98.7 FM. 2. 1050 AM in New York isn't exactly the strongest of signals. That's why they're relocating to 880 AM.

I don't know what it means for Chicago radio though.

WCBS-AM is flagship. Has been News for over 60 years! If Audacy has to LMA their flagship in Market #1, they are in trouble. They bill around 30 million a year and they slashed their newsroom with WINS. This is just really bad.

Good Karma is planning on buying 880 outright at some point. It is sheer STUPID to want their brand on AM instead of 98.7FM. They are also financially in trouble and they are bottom feeding an AM signal with vultures flying overhead.

At some point you will see Chicago AM 670 migrate to FM and both that and AM 780 will be sold off.

Radio is SERIOUSLY in trouble kids.

Z you said it perfect as you always do. Z has been saying it forever and a lot of you on here just have a bad fever and dont get it making excuses. Audacy is bankrupt. The Chicago AM stations will be gone in a few years to pay bills.

Let me add, Audacy making these deals while Bankrupt is BAD BAD BAD. They are in deep shit trying to raise fast cash. They will be shedding AM sticks all over the country to cut land costs, sell land and in turn lower operating expenses and pay bills. They will also LMA better properties, so they can to bring in cash and possible sell to the entity with the LMA at some point making it their problem.

This is NOT normal. They are douching their flagship station, billing 30 mil a year, with reduced expenses, in the #1 market of the nation, keeping an inferior signal on the AM band in the same city. Re-read this over and over, if you feel like posting and before debating me on it.

Rumors are flying on radiodiscussions that WCBS-FM might lose their call sign or might be part of the GK deal. What the hell is going on?

The ESPN 98.7 format is moving to 880, not the 1050 format which is the national programming. It appears for now at least that Good Karma will be operating two separate formats as they are now, but both will be on AM.
