Rick did not link to the actual FB page, so will backlink Rick's Media Notebook blog post as source. Preface, I like JRL. He is eccentric and not shy to rant, whether backed up properly or not. Concerning John "Records" Landecker's FB rant. For starters, LOL.
.....And this constant bitching about the overnight show. Get over it. You know you're not up then anyway.
Lot of us are up at that time. Overnights and Overnight weekends overall, suck. A piece of dung, is a piece of dung. You can call it otherwise, it is dung. Nothing more. Sorry John, radio super serving their audience 24/7 died long time ago. This is a prime example of it and why many, from listeners to advertisers see it no longer relevant and a has been industry. Truth.
The idea that WGN, an AM station, would be programming to 25-54 is utter nonsense and to use the ratings of this group as a measure of the station’s success is totally unfair and misleading. I 've got some news for you. There are people who are older than 54! No really. In fact, some of my best friends are over 54. As a matter of fact, I know some people who are even older than 64!
John please educate us. (John is big on giving lectures w/o the answers. Has been his way since the 80s when he exited CHR and matured). The ad industry overall ignores 54+ and acts like 64+ has had their funeral and are gone. So is WGN's winning strategy focusing to 64+? Or what is that winning formula so people can stop referring it to a 25-54 station? WGN-AM is an anomaly and it is a great station, as it is run. Their bigger problem is, to sustain, they need to find an FM. Even a translator with huge coverage over Chicago like 101.5 or 97.5 FM. (That might be too late). As John said, this would be the solution to: the current state of AM radio these days
