Are Their Good Actors in Radio?

Good afternoon: I write this as I'm enjoying sunny weather at 73 degrees in Chicago.

Chicago and throughout the country have many radio shows which are hosted by a duo. Sometimes the chemistry works and other times, not so much. Perhaps egotism and other factors come into play.

Looking back in radio history, is anyone aware of a radio duo who simply didn't get along?

I have heard a few stories; however, I cannot verify them firsthand.

This might indeed be an empty thread. Nevertheless, I thought I would give it a try.

Finally, I'm aware of some radio pros who for one reason or another, were sick of their station. They told me it was simply a paycheck. This is not exclusive to Chicago radio.

Steve and Garry.
although they did have a short reunion on Oak Street Beach a few years ago. They did not accept their hall of fame induction together, actually Steve didn't even go. Too bad because they made great and memorable radio.

Beyond S&G, they were not paired up, but on the same station with them. Larry Lujack and Steve had an on air, real life, dislike for each other. It boiled over one day with Les Grobstein witnessing and confirming it was true when Steve was stating he would break both of Larry's legs. Well..... Larry showed up in the studio, S&G tails between legs, left the studio, so Larry finished the shift in his usual upfront, 0 craps given fashion. Lol. One of the greatest voices in radio.

Sidenote: Larry retired from radio, was welcomed back on the air more than once and he accepted the offers. Steve? How is your terrestrial career going. Yeah..... In all honesty, Steve has cleaned up his act through the years and his podcast is top notch these days.

Rick: I know you’re best known for getting that Lee Elia tape, and I’ll get to that in a second, but you were also one of the select few live witnesses to one of the most compelling moments in Chicago radio history. Tell me about the day that Larry Lujack burst into the Steve & Garry studio and challenged him to a fight. You were right there in the studio when it happened.

Les: I thought I was going to have to break up a fist fight.

This is kick ass radio! No liners. No cue cards. No 9 seconds to talk. I wish I was younger and grew up with this.

When I was younger, I could not understand why people loved Larry. He was not a puker, screamer or anything everyone else was on a contemporary hit music station or any form of that format. I liked him but he was not my idol. Now that I am older, listening to his masterful selection and manipulation of words to elicit thoughts and comedy, without being outright or vile about it. Nothing short of genius.

WLS in the 80s was shell of what it was in the 60s and 70s. Their Classic Rock, AOR40 approach post Disco, in hindsight, was a bad decision. They survived longer than WABC but at a cost. Ignoring Urban hits, listing tracks on paper and not spinning them. Brining in Steve & Gary. FM came along and (96 Now - Hot Hits B96) cleaned their clocks out in turn, made it harder for WLS-FM/Z95 to be taken seriously, at least initially.
