When it comes to playing new rock in Chicago, I tend to think WXRT-FM is the station to hear it.
I'm biased here because I've been an 'XRT listener for decades.
I don't listen to WKQX-FM/Q101 very often. Can the pros on this board tell me if Q101 plays as much new music/alternative rock as WXRT?
I discount both WDRV-FM/The Drive and WCHI-FM/Rock 95.5. Unless a major rock band such as the Rolling Stones release new music, they stick to their respective classic rock roots. Both stations have their own identity.
A final question. Do college stations such as 89.1 in Naperville, play new rock? It's been years since I've listened to them. I do recall they were musically on point.
Q101 plays new music throughout the day, but if you really want to hear new music, they daypart a lot of it during the evening and overnight hours before it gets airplay during the day, if they ever do. That's been done for years in radio.
I would agree, WXRT is more newer music friendly but not much
I think part of the appeal of 93XRT over the years has been to feature bands & artists that simply don't get much airplay on a more traditional rock station. 93.1 FM tries to balance the free form, alternative rock with classic rock from more established bands & artists. To this day, WXRT also still has a very strong brand which has resisted format changes elsewhere on the radio dial.
I also think it's been this way even before Westinghouse/CBS Radio, now known as Audacy, acquired WXRT and 670 AM The SCORE from Diamond Broadcasting in 1995 for $44 million.
