February 2024 Chicago PPM Ratings

Looking at the back of the book, no real surprise to see both WBBM-FM (B96) and WSHE-FM 100.3 register not much higher than college radio stations.

I'm surprised at the staying power of Classic Hip Hop: WBMX-FM. When WJMK-FM dumped K-Hits, a couple of insiders told me 'BMX wouldn't last more than a year. They were proven wrong.

WXRT-FM remains a powerhouse and is one of the few success stories for owner Audacy in Chicago.

WUSN-FM signals there is an audience for country music.

WLIT-FM is the ongoing success story.

Chicago favors WGN-AM 720 over WLS-AM 890.

I think 100.3 could do better if they had clearer branding and didn't play odd remakes of certain songs.

B96 is heavy on golds, but they also play a lot of current hits. That means they're fighting for the same listeners as 103.5, 100.3 and 104.3. I think at this point it's just acting as a flanker for 104.3 in the same way 100.3 does for 101.9 and it seems to be working.

B96 ia in the same demo as SHE-FM. B96 is not chasing the 6+ demo or 6 - 17. They are shooting for more salable demos.

Some more observations.

CHR and its variations are not doing well in Chicago. All of them are under a 3 share, WTMX, KISS, B96.

WLIT has stayed healthy after Christmas.

The rock outlets are overall kicking ass including WCHI, best it has been doing 6+, ever.

WGCI has rebounded, somewhat. WPWX has not. The Streetz have fallen off the ratings list.

MeTV-FM has fallen from grace. Their older demos are fading out. They are not 80s. But, they are playing a lot of 80s and are sharing some memory punchers with WLS-FM. They are at a position where they will have to keep aging up as time moves on. It is inevitable they will step on WLS-FM's toes more and more. WLS has an air staff, ME-TV, does not. This is where "in between" matters and here it is jocks between songs.

I speculate that MeTV FM is also battling a tech obstacle, with many newer cars’ FM tuners starting at 87.9 or 88.1, rather than the 87.5 frequency more common in cars 10+ years old. 87.7’s audience is aging out, but so are the cars for the remaining demo. People in their 50s and 60s still replace cars and this minuscule criterion won’t play into their purchase decision.

The irony is the HipHop outlet in NYC is languishing in the 1 share for ratings. I think 104.3 has evolved past being a classic hip hop station. That is a good thing for numbers and sales.

In spite of the continuous avalanche that is AM Radio, Nexstar’s cluster-less, FM-less WGN is managing to maintain an ascent, at least for now.

WGN-AM will ultimately need an FM counterpart. A full signal is a far chance. A translator can be had, like WTMJ runs in Milwaukee.

Hi WYTZZ95FM:

I read your message regarding a possible translator for WGN-AM.

Translators seem to be springing up like weeds. I'm not sure of their signal range.

A question: The FCC must monitor both FM spacing and the power of a translator. Are there cases where a translator has interfered with a full power FM's signal? Take any Chicago FM station which broadcasts from the Sears Tower or the Hancock Building for example.

I believe beyond a certain range; the Chicago FM station cannot complain to the FCC because the interference could be "out of market" as it were.

Perhaps beyond a 60-mile radius?

I once read a note from Jeremy who listed the Chicago FM signals which could clearly be heard up in Wisconsin where he lives.

Hunter,

Translators are limited power, have to "translate" an AM signal or an HD signal. Their range is super limited. In small markets they a cover a whole town. In a city like Chicago, no. Some of the translators in Chicago are on 97.5, 101.5, 100.7, 95.9 (multiple). 100.7, etc. Translators are subject to interference claims and are not protected by Class A or higher stations.

The US is so backward. They should have adopted Eureka DAB for AM/Fm or DRM used in many parts of the world for AM. Also expanded the FM band down to 65Mhz, but now some countries have the 4 meter Ham band @ 70Mhz. Even 71Mhz - 99Mhz expansion would have been great. Very backward not wanting to piss people off to buy new hardware. --- How has that IP based entertainment delivery work out while refusing to expand the FM band and pick out a viable digital compression scheme????? (sarcasm)

The price tag for full-power FMs keeps slipping as terrestrial radio deals with listener attrition. Maybe one of the signals is within reach? But does Nexstar want to dig even deeper into their one non-TV property?
