Why are WGCI's ratings in the toliet?

Does anyone know why WGCI's rating are so low? This once great station used to be at the top of the heap for many years. Now, it is BARELY in the top 20.
Has the music gotten that bad or is it the presentation of the radio station?
I would have never had thought that GCI would sink so low ratings wise. Will they ever bounce back?

The music and how the audience the music targets listens to music.

It's mumble rap mostly. The older audience that still listens to radio doesn't like it. The younger audience that listens to that kind of music is streaming it on Spotify, and Soundcloud (It's nicknamed Soundcloud rap for a reason)

Jeremy is right.

Younger formats are in the toilet. Trap and Hip Hop overall is utter trash.

Ever since the serious cutback of radio investment a lot of they Urban stations no longer "super serve" the community like they use to.

WVAZ does a pretty good job reaching the adult Urban audience. Gets solid ratings and it's programmed pretty well. The rest likely are good package sales with it even though the ratings are low. They have pretty much every Urban format in that cluster with 640, 1390, 102.7 and 107.5. You have to go through them if you want to reach most of the Urban audience.

When is that "genre" (I use that word loosely) going to play itself out? Seems like it been out for years. Can't these "artists" be more creative?
I don't mean to sound like an old fart, but it sounds terrible. There are a few artists I like, but those are few and far between.
Even the Hip-Hop music from the 2000's sounds better than this.
I have tried to listen to the current Urban Contemporary stations. I changed after about ten minutes. It makes my head hurt.
Aren't there ANY newer R&B titles that they could add without hurting V-103?
The state of Urban radio, not just in Chicago, but in the United States is in trouble. So is CHR by the way.

Streaming has pretty much destroyed music unfortunately. It's easier for the consumer but as far as quality and the artists go, and radio it's just destroyed everything.

They don't pay the artists much per stream. Maybe like $0.005 (less than 1 cent) per stream goes to the artists. CD sales and MP3 downloads made the artist more. If they're only getting a few cents per stream, why bother to make anything good?

Same goes with labels looking for artists. Why pay someone a bunch of money and effort to go discover talent when they can go find random mumble rappers on Soundcloud and get their few cents that way? The outcome will be the same. Less than 1 cent per stream.

Radio as a result gets lower quality music. Fewer people listen to radio because they can stream everything. Record industry doesn't get the same amount of money, so they go after radio trying to get royalties when before the stations were a huge asset to them when it came to promoting and selling albums. No longer the case.

It's not getting better. This is how it is.

Basically everything being ran "on the cheap". Which is what the recording industry has been doing for awhile now.

So the question begs, if radio is skewing older, and the advertisers want younger, it has to be harder to sell.....
Too, I hear stations
A) always advertising for sales people or
B) asking listeners to call station to advertise. Isn't this lazy, or is it that difficult to hire motivated sales people.

(Hint: I could NEVER sell.)
