I sometimes question Rob Feder. I think the main news story is a non comm, WBEZ up 0.6 and 0.3 behind Newsradio 780 & 105.9. You can't tell me there are no musings about this by the virtual water cooler or management meetings.

WUSN, did the WBIG listeners finally come out of hibernation?

WCHI is not getting harder and splitting a small stale piece of pie with WKQX. Race to the bottom people!

No one in the Top 10 is a younger format, closest being WTMX. How long do the suits deal with B96, GCI being sub par?

Cumulus not doing too hot at all. Wonder how they would do with 94.7 as a 80s 90s 2k rock station and WKQX as an alternative/active rock hybrid? Try to do like a "wall of rock" cluster since they really only have 2 fms.

WLS-FM actually bills well what they do now as boring it might be. They are aiming at females that might not be P1 (primary) listeners of WDRV as they share a lot of audience between the 2.

Ultimately, you will see WLS-AM go all conservative network programming and paid advertisements, run on the ultra cheap like KABC @ a 0.6 share. I do not think you will find a golden goose like they did with WABC in NYC after they paired it up with a rimshot FM.

101.1? Who knows? What can you do when you have no budget to go after your competition that is doing crappy themselves?

I honestly don’t think adding a syndicated show 6-11PM (Which includes 1 hour of the drivetime shift and most of the night shift which is popular among the demo) was a great idea. The show is good (depending on the format) but the Alternative audience does not like syndication. I almost think they’d be better off running jockless at night on 101.1.

When the MD Jon Manley was doing nights, there were a few books prior to the pandemic where the station showed up in the Top 10.

Right now they are #8 overall 18-34. They usually hang around #5 overall 18-34. I don’t know how they are doing in that demo, but I believe Men 18-34 is the target demo. If they are doing OK among Men 18-34, then it’s probably doing just fine. They need to pull that syndicated show though. Going up against 2 local shows at night (WXRT, WCHI) with a canned show will not get them anywhere.

Audacy just figured this out in Dallas. Dropped a show they were piping in from Kansas City and now the ratings are going upna little. WLUM in Milwaukee learned this in 2005. Junk ratings. Dropped syndication, localized, ratings went up. iHeart’s Alternative stations that were built around The Woody Show (syndicated out of Los Angeles) have been dropping like flies. Their 6+ numbers in Philadelphia have been downhill since they added that show there. I’m not sure if that is the reason but it sure seems like it. The music isn’t always the problem…

Yes, Power 106 in LA is in the toilet too. I think a 1.8, WQHT is a 2.0, young formats are just not doing well on radio. HipHop is just utter crap these days, the music is horrible. Also younger kids find music elsewhere unlike the past. In the past Urban radio was in touch with the community, not anymore.

I wonder if BOOST ever subscribed here for ratings. The Streets is nowhere too.

Boost does not subscribe in Chicago as far as I know. It’s an EMF-owned translator and the only station EMF subscribes for PPM is WCKL’s main. They did have 94.3 subscribed for awhile but they no longer do. It would probably be around a .5 if they did. Non commercial CCM stations (Unlike Salem’s Fish stations) don’t really need to use ratings since they don’t sell commercials. If the ratings are low, and they get enough donations from the ones who do listen, then it’s fine. That’s the goal. To sustain.

My guess is either alternative/active hybrid or go classic alternative. Gotta do something to differentiate themselves.
