Its harder to target a secular audience nowdays. A decade ago they had: |
Daughtry, Flyleaf, Lifehouse, Owl City, P.O.D., Red, Skillet
Switchfoot, etc all crossing over on mainstream radio. They could play those mainstream artists with ease alongside the Christian acts like Kutless, NEEDTOBREATHE, Sidewalk Prophets, Newsboys, etc and potentially bring in a secular audience. Sounded good.
Those crossover artists all but disappeared. It was still quite edgy in 2014-2015 when I listened on my travels but by 2016 they were pumping out low tempo songs like What A Beautiful Name by Hillsong Worship alongside some Christian Pop acts like Group 1 Crew, Blanca, TobyMac and Skillet and Switchfoot.
It didn’t get much time on 94.3. They had it on in the Summer of 2018 and it was done by January 1st. For the record, “I Want To Go Back” by David Dunn was the last song they played before switching to Contemporary Worship. There was a huge outpouring of angry listeners for months. Some listeners commented “I really can’t tell the difference” (Probably because they were already playing a lot of Contemporary Worship) while others were happy about it.
I remember the anger of Skillet being pulled seemed to prompt them to add “Alive & Awake” into the Worship playlist. There were some serious trainwreck segues at first.
Nowdays it’s basically still Christian Hot AC-CHR except almost all of it is Contemporary Worship. For every 5-7 new songs that get added, maybe 2 do not fit the Worship category.
Songs seem to repeat every 2 hours. Golds only seem to be refreshed once a year in February or March. That part can get quite stale. Some of the songs end up on the BDS Christian CHR chart months after Air1 drops them.
