It's definitely a new strange world we live in with social media. VERY soon, no opinions will be allowed to be expressed on those platforms. Although it's pretty much here now.

Example: Make a right leaning post on your facebook, WalMart fires you, Target fires you. Make a left leaning post, Jewel fires you, etc. You get the picture. Social media doesn't agree with what you say, they ban you. Temporary or permanent. This society is jacked up. Everything rides on like or don't like. I don't like what some news anchor says, I take my ratings point and DON'T WATCH. If I'm pissed because Starbucks is buying into leftist BS by getting rid of Christmas cups to not "offend", then I just don't spend my money there. It's that simple. All the cancelling and silencing culture is getting way out of hand.

I agree with most of what you said. I do not think it is always cancel culture though.

I pay you to work for me, STFU, keep your personal slant to yourself. Being a public figure you have a live microphone and want to spread your slant because you are in position of power. That is the same with actors. Exactly why I despise George Clooney AND Tim Allen. Act and STFU. I do not care what you think. Act and entertain me.

Clarification: I pay you to work for me, STFU, keep your personal slant to yourself.

That is from the position of an employer. IE: WalMart, Target, any network etc....

With social media, people have a hard time telling the difference between work and personal and also even when personal, if you are in a position of authority, you can influence, so STFU.

"I pay you to work for me STFU" so basically...anyone with a job can't publicly express their political opinion or slant, or face firing. I agree with that, and your tim allen george clooney references as well.

I do find it strange that million dollar elitists that play football are allowed to protest on the job while being paid, and they have political and socially slanted expressions all over their helmets and shoes and what not.

I agree with you on the athletes. That is why I REFUSE to give one dollar toward organized professional sports. They are just as bad. Sorry, on my soap box. When you have athletes make as much as the US Mint while Police, doctors, teachers and the Mariano's bagger make more difference in the world and suffer, #### the whole circle jerk. I get more joy watching HS or non professional league sports.

Not every example of someone getting in trouble for social media posts is "cancel culture." Aside from columnists / political commentators, if you work in journalism, like the news director of WTTW, you're expected to keep your political views to yourself, and that includes social media.

This is so standard for news outlets it's hard to believe Barta was not aware of these expectations and guidelines. Not sure what's in the WTTW handbook, but here are examples from the NYT and Associated Press:

That said, I also have to shake my head at Z95's comments about how any and all athletes and celebrities should just "STFU" and "entertain."

Unlike journalists, there's no ethical obligation for actors or athletes to maintain an impression of impartiality or neutrality. I may not agree with everything celebrities have to say, and to be honest, don't pay their political opinions much attention. But I really don't find it that hard to ignore their political statements and just enjoy their on-screen or on-court performances.

For us plebs, I think common sense goes a long way, and if you have to think very hard about "would my employer (or future employer) be embarrassed or offended by what I'm about to post?" then maybe you don't need to post it on social media.

Yes, I am shaking my head at you. The sports franchises pay these athletes with YOUR money. Your money to enter games. The franchises sell items and their brand. Once again, these athletes are employees of a company that thrives on YOUR money. They are not self sustaining. They are to make profit. They are constantly in the news, on media influencing the masses. They are public figures. They want to push THEIR stance while they are representing the franchise? Negative. As I said, "STFU" and "entertain." Otherwise, go quit and take up your cause. But in that instance, their free engine to push their personal stances is gone.

Elwood, not personal against you at all. I just think you are not thinking this through, all sides.

Everything Z said is right!
Last year, a political ad (for a Senator/Congress seat, I believe) was run. The jock, after playing the paid ad, which pays their salary said "well, if you think I'm voting for you, I'm not."

To be honest, I don't care! The jock now works, "across the street" and I don't know/doubt if that comment had anything to do with it, but.... SHUT UP.

Maybe I listen to the radio for music or watch a baseball game for a game, or might like a discussion, for discussion's sake. Not "the View!"

Sports Radio is not even sports anymore, and it's almost unlistenable!

If someone comes to my house to clean my rug, I don't want to hear their bs. Clean the rug.
When someone making 300 times more than an average person does in 3 lifetimes, tells me how to live, stick it!

Aside, Social media sucks!
