I am surprised they are not piping in the AM drive. That is a bonus.

Looks like the Chicago rock stations don't consider WIIL Rock competition, as the station is never mentioned when discussing Rock 95.5, although I'm pretty sure 95.1 is competing for some of those same rock listeners.

They don't. Look at their number breakouts. They are a non factor in over 3/4 of the market.

WIIL targets and has studios in Lake County. McHenry County is big for them as well. It’s roots and tower are Kenosha County (Technically in the market too for some reason) A lot of that area (Lake County) used to be called “North Metro”

They also have different formats. 95.5 plays nothing new. No new or recent music. 95.1’s playlist is very heavy on new music. It’s competition, but for the rock fans who prefer new music and harder edged rock, it’s not direct competition.

Should point out 95.5 still has a Sag-Aftra contract. I believe that might have some influence in who and how many they hire.

Sag-Aftra. LOL. They let go the entire on air staff. They will get paid, but, so much for the union stepping in to represent.

Jeremy is right, the union does have a say so in the contract (if it was worded correctly) how many they hire, pay, etc.

A) Jeremy is not in the union and is not correct, and neither are you. SAG-AFTRA literally NEVER has any say over who gets hired. The union counsels staff and negotiates collective bargaining agreements on their behalf, regarding salary and working conditions according to Labor Law. No contracts contain HR provisions. The agreements relegate those to Corporate policies.
95.5 does retain an uncommon contract item that lets stations retain its union scale pay by inheritance, dating back to WNUA, which was ingenious, and fortunate for all subsequent staffs of that frequency.

B) Angi Taylor is "edgy?" Lol. She's a trendy, pandering yes-girl and always has been, and the "hot mom" image thing was gross. Hope she saved her $$ cuz now she'll be gone in a year.

WIIL is displaced enough from the metro area that translators now exist on 95.1 in Chicago (downtown), Bolingbrook and Plano — two of which once relayed WIIL from 107.9 WLEY-HD3 but that whole arrangement fell apart. They just don’t cover enough population to have a significant effect on 95.5’s share, and as others pointed out here the playlists are very different.

Same to the southwest of Chicago, Q-Rock 100.7 has a decent rock playlist with many currents so there is little overlap there, not to mention Q-Rock has no presence anywhere northeast of Frankfort or Lockport anymore, thanks to the Calvary translator atop Wills Tower.

To the southeast XRock 103.9 WXRD might be stealing some listeners from 97.1 The Drive, but the pop density in NW Indiana is lower so again, not that much effect even though their playlists are similar. I suppose XRock could keep some people away from 95.5 too. Tenth of a percentage point maybe?

The big question is how much credibility does she have when it comes to Rock?? This audience will turn their back on a poser before she can even finish saying the call letters for the first time. They would've been better off getting someone from a Rock format than someone from a station like KISS. No disrespect to her and I'm sure she's good at what she does, but you gotta have credibility with the audience that listens to that particular kind of music and right now, we don't know if she does.

Angie will do fine IF the audience is open minded to a quality radio personality connected to Chicago for a long time. IF at some point she gets a male counterpart with rock radio experience as a second banana that will help a great deal. It looks like Capone will be in afternoons which if it happens will be a good hire. I think that because it is the only shift they didn't advertise for on the job sites.

Yes, everyone knows that people who listen to Whitesnake and Foreigner on FM radio in the year 2020 are true connoisseurs of taste. Only the finest in radio hosts will satisfy the discriminating palate of a Def Leppard fan.

Seriously, she's going to do fine. Looking forward to hearing her make the transition.

Your sarcasm is funny I laughed. But it also shows that you are not versed in certain radio audiences.

Urban stations that do not "super serve" their audiences fail.

Dance radio stations need to be high energy on air, on the street, in the clubs, in touch with their audience. It is a lifestyle not a format. Also why it is expensive to run and radio avoids it like the plague.

Rock radio. No disrespect to Angi. It is one thing to be a card liner reader. It is another thing to "really be into" the scene. Which one is she? We will find out. But, like dance radio, it is a lifestyle. You need to convince people to tune in to a commercial station and not some free stream or their iPod. So yes, if this station does follow its path of any level of hard rock music, it does matter what is in between the music cracking the mic.

It was many years ago, but basic radio, is basic radio. The small 3kw Mono signal, part time on 103.1 beat out the 24hr 50KW ZRock on 106.7FM. Listeners knew on 103.1 RPM, they were getting live, local and someone talking to them that "got it".

I don't disagree that radio stations need to effectively connect with their audiences.
But a personal pet peeve of mine is when I see job postings or industry discussions that talk about "living the lifestyle" of their target audience. In my opinion , any discussion of "living the lifestyle" is based more on cliches and stereotypes of an audience than anything else. Whenever Zander Kelly posts about what the rock crowd supposedly demands, it just reminds me of that cliche every single time.
