radio icons from back in the day

Been a while, hope everyone is ok, this week on The Beat Chicago, we're featuring icons in Chicago radio from back in the day.

Yesterday was Jonathon Brandmeier, today is Herb Kent, tomorrow Robert Murphy, Thursday is Doug Banks, Friday will be Larry Lujack.

We'll add a few more before the end of summer. I had some time so I wanted to create some different content and my experiences with some of the icons from the past and/or some insight into their importance (for our users) in radio back when on-air talent was far more important that it's been relegated to today.

Wind 560 had some talent: Bob Del Giorno, Dave Baum,
Connie Sczerzen, Eddie Schwartz...to name a few.

Doug Banks was such an awesome person and on air personality. Gone too soon.

I always think of Stu Collins since I think he came on "The New WMET Chicago's Class FM" following the famous "The Noise Is Gone" switch - and I often see his son Brad (ex-Chicago radio) posting on Facebook. Brad recently left radio and he now sells cars in Knoxville, TN. I think Stu still lives somewhere is Wisconsin.

This is a bit of an "outlier" - but as long as you're asking, here goes...Dick Buckley, Sunday afternoons on WBEZ, Great introduction to "classic jazz" from the big-band and bebop era for both newbies and long-time fans. Passed away in 2010 but I think his son is still around who can give you some material.

That is another good one ChiTownGal. I think Dick was on WFYR when they were oldies and I really think he had an oldies based national syndicated show?
