There's a lot of history with this. |
The Broadcast Architecture (Allen Kepler) Smooth Jazz Network has been a partner with iHeartMedia for quite some time. They were responsible for a lot of what was heard on WNUA. It's national stream is actually on the iHeartradio platform.
When WNUA went Spanish in 2009, the Smooth Jazz format actually was on 95.5 HD2 for awhile, however because 87.7 picked up the network the same day, it didn't last long.
Skip ahead a couple years later, Merlin Media took over operations of 87.7 and the Smooth Jazz Network was moved to 97.9 HD3 until the contract ran out. At that point, they began programming their own Jazz format, which wound up on 101.1 HD2 after Cumulus took over operations.
Somewhere along the line, iHeartMedia teamed up with the local airports to create "Air Chicago" which ran on WKSC HD-2 and a webstream set up for it. Ran the Smooth Jazz format with Total Traffic, Weather and News updates.
Eventually the airport deal ended, and WKSC HD2 was rebranded "Smooth Jazz Chicago" It was able to keep it's internet stream. Most iHeart HD specific stations that are not relaying one of the national feeds or feeding an analog translator do not have one.
iHeart has been putting "The Breeze" format on HD sub channels almost everywhere Entercom owns a station, WKSC HD2 was the only one that was either not leased (WLIT HD-2 is leased, and feeds 97.5) simulcasting another station (102.7-2 simulcasts 1390) or simulcasting a national internet stream (95.5-2 was Delilah) No clue what is on 107.5-2 or it's origin. It was running the "Evolution" Dance format the last time I heard it.
Must have taken a lot of convincing to get that Smooth Jazz format back on the air. If it continues, this means the Delilah stream simulcast will shift elsewhere, and that could be most anywhere. I believe Delilah was also initially simulcasting on 102.9 HD2 in Dallas. Might still be the case.
