The Republican controlled Federal Communications Commission voted along party lines to repeal the national cap on TV ownership by a 2-1 vote. FCC chair Brendan Carr said the decision would update outdated broadcast ownership laws and help local news.

Opponents say it’s an effort to consolidate conservative media ownership across the country. The lone no vote, Democrat Anna M. Gomez said the decision to eliminate the 39% national audience reach cap is unlawful on its face and said since Congress set the cap in federal law, only Congress can change it.
