Not for Profit, is interesting. You need to be:
• Registered as a Not for Profit in your state
• Educational or Public Mission: The station must be organized to advance an educational, cultural, civic, or public safety program rather than a commercial business.
This can be done claiming Dance music, Current hard rock, etc. Stretch of "public mission" but you can prove that no one is serving this audience on local, regional or national stations, but trying to deliver to the public what is not available elsewhere. Or you make the station run by College students, under the educational umbrella. There are ways around this but not guaranteed.
But this is where it falls apart:
• • No Commercials: You are strictly banned from broadcasting traditional commercial ads or promotional announcements for for-profit entities.
• • Underwriting Allowed: You can accept financial contributions and read simple, non-promotional acknowledgements (underwriting) of donors and local businesses.
The Underwriting is a tough sell for a lot of advertisers. You need grant writers to do this. No commercials is not an option.
Hence I believe Not for Profit is a dicey and painful path, probably not worth it in most cases? Works well for EMF and most other Religious broadcasters.
